Subject
Once-Soviet Moscow
Description
The Kurskaia Metro Station opened in 1950 and is located on the Koltsevaia (Circle) line. Its vestibule was originally decorated with a few lines from an old version of the Soviet national anthem: "Stalin brought us up to be loyal to the nation, inspired us to labor and great deeds," as well as with a statue of Stalin.
While the lines and the statue were removed after Khrushchev denounced Stalin in 1956, a 2009 renovation to Kurskaia station returned the lines to the vestibule. In October 2009, additional lines referencing Lenin were added to the station: "Through the thunderstorms, the sun of freedom shone for us, and great Lenin lit the way."
